Eight weird domain name facts
1. Coca Cola owns 61 'ahh'-related domains
In February 2014, Coca Cola registered "", " " and every other amount of 'h's up to 62 (yes, we checked). Each domain hosts different content which is constantly updated based on what is performing well. As part of the company's "Ahh Effect" campaign, the sites are “continuously tapping into a teen’s desire for discovery, constant stimulation, and novelty," according to Pio Schunker, senior vice president at Coca Cola.
2.sells - for $13m
The domain name "" was sold for $13m in 2010 to Clover Holdings at auction after its previous owner, Escom LLC, was declared bankrupt. The URL was originally registered by Gary Kremen, the founder of Match.com, in 1994, but was mistakenly transferred to businessman Stephen M Cohen in 1996 after he used forged letters and faxes to fraudulently obtain the domain. Mr Cohen was fined $65m in April 2001, and imprisoned four years later, for the crime.
3. You can still buy Soviet Union web addresses
Although the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, it is still possible to register a .su domain. In May 2013, over 120,000 were in use.
4. A Welsh village owns the world's longest single word web address
The longest unhyphenated single word domain name belongs to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, a Welsh village, and was registered by hosts Internetters in October 1999. The town's name translates into English as "the church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".
5. There are 280 top-level domains, from .coffee to .cat
While most internet users are familiar with top-level domains such as ".com" and ".org", the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) also offers more unusual options like ".bike" and ".plumbing". The organisation has planned to launch 617 new generic top-level domains, including ".diamonds" and ".academy" between 2013 and 2015.
6. A man registered almost 15,000 domains in one day
In April 2012, Mike Mann registered 14,962 domains in one day that he planned to sell on for profit. According to Mr Mann, his company, which registers 300 web addresses per day to sell on, makes an average of $400,000 per month. He said: "I'm just really greedy. I want to own the world."
7. All 'a' web addresses are taken
Every domain name consisting of the letter 'a' repeated multiple times has been registered, from one to 63. It isn't possible to register a URL longer than 63 characters. All of the internet's three-letter domains have been claimed too.
8. The top 20 most expensive domains are worth £100m
Including pricey web addresses such as "", which sold for £10m in 2008, and " ", bought for £9.5m in 2009, the top 20 expensive domains list totals nearly £100m.The most expensive ever sold was "VacationRentals.com" for $35m (£21m) in 2007.
